At CROSS Services, every volunteer has a story—some take unexpected and inspiring paths. For Lisa, that journey began years ago when, as a young parent, she needed support similar to what CROSS Services provides today. Now retired, she’s chosen to give back by volunteering at our Food Shelf, ensuring others in the community receive the same helping hand she once did.
“I had watched the wonderful work CROSS Services does for over 15 years while serving as the Finance Director for the City of Rogers,” Lisa shared. “When I retired, I knew I wanted to give back to the community, so I filled out the online volunteer interest form. Tracey from CROSS Services reached out and invited me to tour the Food Shelf.”

That tour was a turning point. Seeing the scale of the operation, the dedication of both staff and volunteers, and the number of families served each day made an immediate impact.
“I was really impressed by how professional and efficient the team is, especially considering the small staff size,” Lisa said. “Hearing firsthand about the volume of families served and the variety of programs offered was both surprising and inspiring.”
In fact, in 2024, 18% of Minnesotans were served by the state’s emergency food system, reflecting the critical role organizations like CROSS Services play in providing assistance. It’s also worth noting that 1 in 5 households in Minnesota faced food insecurity, with 26% of households with children lacking regular access to the nutrition they need to thrive, according to the 2024 Statewide Hunger Study, conducted by Second Harvest Heartland. These statistics show just how important it is for people like Lisa to step in and make a difference.
Beyond the desire to give back, Lisa also wanted to stay active and meet others in the community. Volunteering in the Food Shelf warehouse became the perfect fit.
“Now, a year later, I absolutely love being part of CROSS Services. I’ve met incredible people who share my passion for helping others, and many of them have become friends,” she shared.
Lisa’s story is a reminder that almost every family has, at some point, faced challenges where community support can make a difference. And for those who have received help in the past, volunteering can be a meaningful way to give back.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, Lisa encourages you to take that first step.
“I would challenge anyone considering it to reach out. You won’t regret it.”
