Food Rescue/Warehouse Associate

Position Summary

The Food Rescue/Warehouse Associate plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth daily operations of the food shelf. This position supports food distribution, trains and guides volunteers, maintains a clean and safe facility, provides welcoming customer service to clients, and serves as a backup driver for the food rescue program. The ideal candidate is dependable, service-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Hours: Monday- Thursday 8am-4:30pm and Friday 8- 3pm, Tuesdays (11:30am-8pm).  Weekends as needed per events to deliver and/or pick up donations.

Warehouse & Food Shelf Operations

  • Receive, sort, stock, rotate, and store food and supplies in accordance with food safety and inventory guidelines
  • Maintain organized storage areas, coolers, freezers, and warehouse spaces
  • Daily operate forklift, electric pallet jack and Ballymore
  • Assist with food distribution and client shopping experiences as needed
  • Daily log in incoming and outgoing data

Volunteer Training & Support

  • Train, orient, and support volunteers in warehouse, food shelf, and cleaning tasks
  • Provide clear instructions and ensure volunteers follow safety, food handling, and organizational procedures
  • Serve as a positive role model for volunteers, reinforcing a respectful and welcoming environment

Client Service

  • Provide courteous, respectful, and compassionate customer service to all clients
  • Support and help manage client flow and ensure a dignified shopping experience in 30 minutes
  • Assist clients as needed while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism

Property & Facility Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the property and facility on a daily basis, including:
    • Cleaning bathrooms
    • Vacuuming floors
    • Operating a floor cleaner/scrubber
    • General cleaning of the warehouse, food shelf, and common areas, including training and delegating to volunteers
  • Follow cleaning schedules and safety protocols
  • Ensure sidewalk snow and ice removal
  • Keep the outside area garbage free

Food Rescue Program (Backup Driver)

  • Serve as a backup driver for the food rescue program and special events as needed
  • Pick up donated food from partner locations and transport it safely to the food shelf
  • Load and unload food donations, following safe lifting practices
  • Weigh food rescue donations into Pantry Saver software
  • Help support and maintain cleanliness of food rescue vehicles and report maintenance needs

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Microsoft suite computer skills to manage daily log data entry
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks throughout a shift
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to serving individuals and families with dignity and respect

Preferred

  • Experience working in a warehouse, food shelf, or nonprofit setting
  • Experience training or supervising volunteers
  • Familiarity with food safety practices
  • Pallet Jack experience
  • Forklift Operator experience
  • Ballymore training
  • Experience driving box trucks including a DOT health card

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a warehouse and food shelf environment with exposure to refrigerated and freezer areas
  • Requires regular lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and standing
  • Occasional early mornings or evenings may be required for food distribution and client support

Other

  • Supports CROSS Services at parades, events and community booths as needed.
  • Attend CROSS scheduled meetings
  • Lead and execute special projects upon request
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director/ Chief of Operations or their assigned staff.
