With food shelves expected to see higher demand in the coming weeks, CROSS Services needs volunteers now more than ever. People like Joe are helping neighbors meet their basic needs—and you can too.
Since 2022, Joe has been a dedicated volunteer at CROSS Services, always ready to lend a hand to shoppers, fellow volunteers, and staff alike. His light-hearted, easy-going attitude—and occasional jokes—make him a joy to be around.
Joe knew that after retirement, he wanted to give back to the community.
“All through my working career I knew that when I retired I wanted to give back to the community in some way. I had heard about CROSS Services through the food drives and fundraisers that we had at my church, Word of Peace in Rogers.”
Encouraged by his wife, who volunteered at CROSS Services during the pandemic, Joe reached out and took a tour. He was inspired by the way clients can shop for their own groceries—a personal touch that allows clients to shop with dignity and choice.
“My wife did some volunteering at CROSS Services during the pandemic, and told me that I should give it a try. I contacted Pat at CROSS Services and she told me to stop by and she would give me a tour. Once I saw how CROSS Services was set up and the kind of work they did I was sold. Having the client shop for their groceries, I feel, puts a personal touch to the food banks.”
Volunteering has also helped Joe stay connected after retirement:
“Once you retire you start to lose contact with the people you worked with. Since joining CROSS Services, I have filled that void and made some good friends. Everyone is there because they want to help in some way.”
He encourages others to consider volunteering:
“If you are looking for someplace to volunteer please consider CROSS Services. The staff there is so friendly and accommodating. You can work as little or as many hours as you want.”
Joe’s story is a reminder that volunteers are at the heart of everything CROSS Services does.
There are many ways to support CROSS Services, particularly during this time of unprecedented need:
- Volunteer your time – Help at the Food Shelf, front desk, or Sweet Repeat Boutique.
- Donate essentials – Contribute food, clothing, or household essentials.
- Make a financial gift – Every donation helps neighbors in need.
- Spread the word – Share CROSS Services’ mission with your friends, family, and community.
No matter how you get involved, your support helps local families meet their basic needs. Learn more about volunteering and sign up for a tour at CROSSservices.org/volunteer.
