As the year winds down and the holiday season wraps us in its festive embrace, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the incredible acts of kindness that have defined our community over the past months. Since joining CROSS Services mid-year, I’ve been inspired daily by the generosity of our donors and community partners. Their unwavering support has painted a vivid picture of the compassion that thrives within our community.
This holiday season was no exception. The outpouring of support we witnessed was nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing how deeply people care about their neighbors. Among the many heartfelt stories, one stands out—a tale of giving that captures the very essence of the holiday spirit.

Meet Andy Hedlund, a dedicated State Farm agent whose commitment to community goes beyond his professional role. Andy and his remarkable team fully embraced the holiday spirit, planning a volunteer activity and organizing a toy drive that brought joy to countless children and families.
Their efforts were more than just charitable acts; they were a beacon of hope and kindness during an emotional time for many. Andy’s story is a testament to how one individual’s dedication can ripple through a community, inspiring others to give, share, and support.
A SEASON OF JOY AND LOSS
This initiative took on an even deeper significance when Andy’s mother, Denise, a lifelong special education teacher, passed away during the holiday season. In her honor, Andy and his family decided to redirect the outpouring of love and support from their friends and family toward something Denise would have cherished—bringing joy to children.
“Making kids smile was my mom’s thing,” Andy shared with me. “She cared so deeply about children, especially those who didn’t always have a reason to smile. We wanted to honor her in a way that felt meaningful, and helping kids felt exactly right.”

Thanks to the generosity of donors like Andy and his family, CROSS Services’ Birthday Program is well-stocked, ensuring that children in our community can celebrate their special days with joy and dignity. As Andy put it, “It wasn’t just about donating—it was about knowing the care that CROSS puts into distributing these toys year-round. It’s reassuring to know these gifts will continue making kids smile for months to come, just like my mom would have wanted.”
Stories like Andy’s remind us of the profound impact we can have when we come together as a community. I am incredibly grateful to Andy, Paul, and all our donors and volunteers who make our work possible.
At CROSS Services, stories like Andy’s are the heartbeat of our mission. They remind us that community is built through collective acts of generosity, both big and small. As we move into the new year, we invite you to join us in continuing this vital work. Whether it’s through a financial contribution, volunteering your time, or partnering with CROSS Services, there are so many ways to make a difference.
