Girl Scout Troop 16123, part of the Crow River Service Unit from Albertville and St. Michael, made Mother’s Day and spring special this year by coordinating, collecting, and donating about 1,300 items to CROSS Services.
To earn their Bronze Award and to make a difference for local families, the troop chose to volunteer with CROSS. For Mother’s Day, seven girls decorated and filled 40 bags with treats to thank mothers for all they do for their families.
“The Mother’s Day bags were a hit for the clients,” CROSS Program Manager Daisy Barton said. “I recall a mother being so surprised due to her children living in other cities – she was very appreciative to receive something to acknowledge her.”
“Spring into Giving” was the next successful project for the troop. Each Girl Scout distributed 50 bags in the community and asked locals families to support their efforts to collect donations of items most needed – resulting in 1,300 items (781 pounds of food and 70 pounds of books). The troop collected, sorted, and delivered the donations to CROSS in May.
The food collected by Girl Scout Troop 16123 will help feed approximately 30 people for two weeks.
“As a troop, we were so thrilled and overwhelmed with the generosity of all the families that participated in the donation. This was such a success that we plan to continue this project again next year,” Girl Scout Troop 16123 Leader Teresa Lutz said.
The CROSS Food Shelf serves about 600 families each month at the Rogers site. Through partners and outreach, food is provided to more than 5,000 additional people monthly. The food shelf in Rogers provides a 10-15 day supply of food consisting of bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, frozen meats/food, and shelf stable foods to individuals and families in need.
