JOB TITLE: Director of Development and Communications

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

LOCATION: Rogers, MN

FLSA: Exempt

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Director of Development and Communication is an integral part of the leadership team and a dedicated development team member consisting of the Executive Director, Events and Community Engagement Coordinator, Social Media and Marketing contractor while supporting Volunteer-based development, all communications, and Events. The Director of Development and Communications is charged with advancing our mission of addressing food insecurity and providing essential social services to our community. The Director of Development and Communications will be responsible for leading communications/marketing, all fundraising efforts, cultivating donor relationships, and implementing strategic initiatives to support the organization’s growth and sustainability.

 

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Fundraising Strategy and Execution:                                                                                                                     

  • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet financial goals, take an active role in leading all aspects of CROSS Services’ contributed revenue, including donor solicitation, planned giving, events, annual fund, constituent fundraising, grants, and sponsorships.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities from individual donors, corporations, foundations, government agencies, and churches, etc.
  • Plan and execute fundraising events, campaigns, and appeals to engage supporters and generate revenue.
  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising efforts, adjusting strategies as needed to ensure success. Coordinate and execute fundraising events, leveraging them as opportunities for donor engagement and relationship-building.
  • Provide leadership in developing CROSS Services’ short and long-range financial plans with the Executive Director and Chief of Operations, in line with the organization’s mission.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective donors, including individuals, businesses, and organizations.  Oversight of matching gifts.
  • Develop personalized engagement plans to deepen donor relationships and increase their involvement and support.
  • Provide excellent stewardship to donors, ensuring timely acknowledgment, recognition, and ongoing communication.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with individuals, corporations, civic organizations, governments, religious organizations, and foundations to enhance the agency’s community presence and support.
  • Integrate omni style fundraising.

Grant Writing and Management:

  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations, government agencies, corporations, and other grant-making entities.
  • Oversee the identification, application, and management of grants, ensuring compliance and effective reporting.
  • Manage the grant application process, including tracking deadlines, gathering required documentation, and submitting timely and accurate proposals.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director and Chief of Operations to develop compelling grant narratives and budgets that align with organizational priorities.

Marketing, Communications, and Social Media:

  • Develop materials and messaging that effectively communicate the organization’s impact and fundraising needs.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to align fundraising efforts with the agency’s mission and programs.
  • Utilize various communication channels, including social media, email marketing, and traditional media, to raise awareness and engage supporters.
  • Represent the organization at community events, speaking engagements, and networking opportunities to promote fundraising initiatives.
  • Secure written testimonial letters from multiple stake holder groups.

Strategic Leadership:

  • Articulate strategic vision for fund development/communications authentically and compellingly to CROSS Services Executive Director, Board, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the executive leadership team, board of directors, and staff to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities and goals, providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
  • Monitor and report on fundraising performance, providing regular updates to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Stay informed about best practices, trends, and innovations in fundraising and philanthropy, sharing insights and recommendations with the organization.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as in nonprofit management, business administration, communications, or equivalent related experience.
  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of success in individual giving, major gifts, grants, and event fundraising.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization’s mission and impact to diverse audiences.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire donors, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience managing staff, volunteers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement fundraising plans that align with organizational goals and objectives.  Knowledge of fundraising best practices, ethical standards, and legal regulations governing nonprofit organizations.
  • Proficiency in donor management software, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.

The employee will need to be able to articulate, hear and be heard across phone lines.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle required.
