A friendly ‘food fight’ between departments at the city of Maple Grove in April helped collect hundreds of pounds of food to help local families in need.
“The city of Maple Grove offers a Fit for Life Wellness Program to all benefit earning employees. There are many aspects to the wellness program, one of which is community outreach,” said Karie Weldon, Maple Grove Records Management Technician.
For two weeks in April, employees held a food drive/department ‘Food Fight’ to collect food and non-food items for donation to CROSS.
“The city was divided into five different groups/departments competing to see which donated the most items in weight,” Weldon said. The winning department received a healthy snack provided by the city’s Wellness Program. During the ‘Food Fight’ the Maple Grove Public Works came in with the most donated food – collecting 687 pounds.
Overall, Maple Grove employees collected 1,445 pounds of food to donate to CROSS – which will help feed 50 people for two weeks.
Families choose food best suited to their needs in a grocery store type of setting at the CROSS Food Shelf, which provides 10-15 days of food for families each month including fresh produce, bread, frozen and shelf stable foods. Each year, CROSS serves approximately 1,900 local families.
